Honoring the Best & Brightest in Progressive Leadership

The Young Elected Officials Network 35 Under 35 List (#YEO35) recognizes passionate and impactful young elected leaders at all levels of government who have advanced progressive change, made meaningful impact on their communities, and contributed to the growth of the YEO Network and the progressive pipeline.

Honorees were chosen from a selection committee of YEO staff, alumni, and progressive champions close to the network and were scored based on four main criteria:

  • Overall contribution as a member of the YEO Network

  • Effectiveness in advancing progressive policy

  • Involvement in and impact on their local community

  • Historic imprint on the seat or body in which they are elected

The Class of 2020

The YEO Network's first cohort of #YEO35 honorees are dynamic progressive champions elected to municipal, county and statewide office in 13 states. They represent a small snapshot of the over 800 young leaders that make up YEO's core membership and the hundreds more mentors and alumni across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but depict perfectly the bold, focused, big-hearted leadership that an ideal member of our network embodies.

They reflect the remarkable diversity of the YEO Network and of the new generation of America's elected leaders: Nearly half are women, 4 in 5 are persons of color, and 1 in 3 are LGBTQ. These change-makers are also history-makers: Many are the youngest or first of their race, gender or orientation to hold their office or serve in their body.

They are doing the hard work and taking the bold steps necessary to dismantle broken systems, close glaring gaps, uplift the marginalized, and expand opportunity. They are leaders who serve tirelessly both in government and in their communities.

We are proud to honor their service and dedication to making our communities and our country more free and fair for all.
