YEO White House Visit- June 2011
YEOs visit the White House
June 17, 2011
“The reason why we run for office is not to be somebody, but to do something.” –President Barack Obama to the Young Elected Officials
Nearly 200 YEOs from across the country had the rare opportunity to walk through the main entrance of the White House as guests of President Barack Obama. Top administration officials briefed us on issues including the economy, energy alternatives, and innovative technology programs. Our young electeds took full advantage of this occasion, expressing their opinions, sharing their experiences, and engaging the administration on the issues most important to their constituents.
Following the half day of briefings, YEOs enjoyed a reception in their honor in the East Room of the White House attended by President Obama. We appreciate the officials that met with YEOs throughout the day and their commitment to including young local and state elected officials in the administration’s policy development. The YEOs were briefed by:
- David Agnew – Deputy Director, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs
- Austan Goolsbee – Chairman, Council of Economic Advisors
- Stephanie Cutter – Deputy Senior Advisor to the President
- Heather Zichal – Deputy Assistant to the President, Office of Energy and Climate Change
- Secretary Shaun Donovan – Department of Housing and Urban Development
- Aneesh Chopra – Chief Technology Officer
- Nick Rathod – Deputy Director, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs
The Obama Administration has taken notice of the Young Elected Officials Network because you are a network of innovative, inspiring community leaders. Please continue to stay involved, sign up for telebriefings, join us at events, and email us with ideas for trainings, newsletter articles, and networking opportunities. Remember, this is a Network of, by, and for YEOs!
