Town & Gown Issues Discussion for Elected Officials

Held September 25, 2007

Town Gown TelebriefPresenters:
Patrick Allen, Director of Community Relations, University of Georgia
Vince Wong, Assistant Director, UCLA Community & Local Governments Relations

There is something unique about cities and towns that are home to colleges and universities. The transient student population creates challenges and opportunities for local and state elected officials.

This telebrief, moderated by County Commissioners Elton Dodson of Athens, Georgia included presenters Patrick Allen, Director of Community Relation for the University of Georgia and Vince Wong, Assistant Director of UCLA Community & Local Government Relations.

Allen focused his presentation on housing issues. He spoke on several topics including the pressures of student enrollment versus available resources, academic considerations, who should meet the needs – the university or the private sector, and encouraging communication between students and neighbors.

Wong, the second to present, spoke about what universities mean to municipalities, and vice versa. Wong spoke about the importance of discussing town & gown issues and other policy areas that are affected, including economic development, workforce development, traffic and parking.
